I am back from the most incredible experience of my Professional life as a educator. The Golden Apple Foundation held the 23rd annual event honoring ten middle school teachers. The Class of 2008, is an amazing group of teachers, I am humbled to be a part of this class. We all were a bit nervous for our speeches, and we got to view our 2 1/2 minute “video” for the first time. The event will be aired on Thursday, September 18 at 8:00-9:00 Channel 11 (WTTW)

Of course, in true fashion, it was not without stories and events on my part. The experience will be my first chapter in my book! First, as I was going down the escalator I got my dress caught. It was so jammed that I was literally fused to the machine. Luckily, the former student, Bette, who was introducing me, was with me and she got security. I thought for a moment I was going to have to get undressed right there on the escalator! They managed to get the escalator moving backwards, but the bottom of the dress had major grease. You really couldn’t tell.

Got my makeup on, and the taping was on. There are ten winners and I was #10. The intro went great, so was the 2 1/2 minute video they produced about me and my students. They announced my name, I walked up, of course, this time picking up my long dress. Then…. NO speech in the teleprompter. There I was, an open mic in front of 800 people. Then they realized what was happening and announced that they had erased my speech. Soooo, I had about five minutes on an open mic, while they were retyping my speech. I could have gone on without it since I had memorized it but, I was so in my element. Me, open mic, and five minutes = priceless. Got to ab lib and be myself! After they got my speech up, I nailed it. What an event!! Only me….
